Do Dental Fillings Need to Be Replaced?

Fillings are a frontline form of restorative dentistry, designed to protect your teeth from further damage and decay while providing structural support in the aftermath of a cavity. However, like any dental work, fillings don’t last forever and may need replacement over time. Below, our Ballston Lake dentist, Dr. Colin Morton, outlines how to tell when it may be time to get your filling checked out.

The lifespan of a filling depends on several factors, including the material used, your oral hygiene habits, and your overall dental health.

In the past, many fillings were made of a metallic material known as amalgam. While these types of fillings are known for their longevity, their silvery color, tendency to expand and contract based on the temperature, and potential to contain mercury mean that they often disrupt the health and aesthetics of a patient’s smile. Nowadays, most dentists prefer composite (tooth-colored) fillings, which are designed to last about 5 to 7 years (but can endure for much longer with proper care). In addition to providing a more natural appearance, another upside to composite fillings is that they can often be repaired without the need for total replacement.

Signs that a dental filling might need to be replaced include increased sensitivity to hot or cold, pain when biting down, or visible cracks or wear in the filling. If a filling becomes loose or falls out, it’s essential to visit your dentist promptly to avoid further decay or infection, which could lead to the need for more complex and costly procedures, like a root canal and/or dental crown. Some patients also choose to proactively have their old metal fillings replaced with tooth-colored ones.

Regular dental check-ups are the best way to ensure that your fillings remain in good condition. During these visits, your dentist will examine your fillings for any signs of wear, leakage, or other issues. If caught early, replacing a worn-out filling is usually a quick and straightforward procedure.

Keeping up with oral hygiene and attending routine check-ups can help extend the life of your fillings and prevent the need for replacements sooner than necessary. Contact our Ballston Lake dental practice today to schedule an appointment.
